WAYNE WOOD

Peacefully on Thursday, June 25, 2026 (Richard William) Wayne Wood passed away at the age of 87 at the Teulon Hunter Memorial Hospital.

He leaves behind his wife, Eileen of 49 years; daughters, Gail Routh (Edmonton), Wendy Choquette and grandson, Kaleb Choquette (LaBroquerie), son Kent Wood (Balmoral) and step-daughter Sherry (Glen) Weaver (Balmoral).

He was predeceased by his first wife Lorraine McKinnon; sister June Chuter; parents, Cyril and Laura Wood and son-in-law Ron Choquette and daughter-in-law Ruth Davis and step-grandson Liam Weaver.

Born March 2, 1939, Wayne was raised, along with his sister June, by his parents who had settled in the Balmoral area in the late 1930s. At 17, Wayne joined the Canadian Armed Forces and was eventually stationed at Gimli Air Force Base after having been trained as an Aero Mechanical Technician. After his discharge he married Lorraine McKinnon of Balmoral and they settled in the small town. There he started his own bread and bakery delivery service selling the McGavin’s brand and for many years serviced the rural farms and areas bringing baked goods and sugary treats to outlying families no matter the weather, and making a lot of friends along his route.

In 1973 he joined the newly opened Xerox of Canada Winnipeg office and trained as a copier technician which is where he stayed until receiving an early retirement package in 1994. Wanting to keep busy for a few more years, he acquired his Class 1 license and drove for Charison’s Turkey Hatchery until his final retirement in 2003.

In 1977, he had met and married Eileen McDowell and they, along with the kids moved to the Teulon area. Here Wayne enjoyed the company of his neighbours and being a “hobby farmer” at last, with a small cow/calf operation. He always enjoyed the spring calving season and baling hay as well as summer weekends and holidays at his family cottage in Laclu. He loved his speed boats; family holidays and the annual “Ball of Beer Weekend” with friends!

In 2003 he and Eileen sold their acreage and moved into Crescent Creek Park in Teulon which then enabled them to travel south to Arizona for the winter months until March 2020. During that time they made wonderful and lasting friendships in both their “northern” and “southern” homes.

Slowly Wayne’s later years were complicated with a diagnosis of vascular dementia in 2015, followed by metastatic bone cancer in 2023. He had to finally make the move to Teulon Hospital in September 2025.

Cremation has taken place with interment at Victoria Church Cemetery in Balmoral. A private celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at a later date.

We sincerely thank all the knowledgeable health care team and exceptional staff at Teulon Hospital for the kind and wonderful comfort care Wayne received during his stay and to Ken Loehmer for all his help and guidance.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be payable to I.E.R.H.A. in “Memory of Wayne Wood”, Teulon Hospital Rec Program, Box 89, Teulon, Manitoba, R0C 3B0 or a charity of your choice.

“To everything, there is a Season.”
